250. Hurricane

natalie-grant-hurricaneNatalie Grant, a Christian singer/songwriter, wrote a song that came out of her experience with depression following the birth of her third child.

The lyrics say that when the rain comes, “Call His name,” and “He’ll find you in the hurricane” To me, the rain is the onset of depression and the hurricane is full-blown depression.

I had not previously used the metaphor of  depression being like a hurricane, but that surely explains the experience. You’re not in control of what’s happening to you and are thrown about by hurricane-like winds that render you helpless and in constant turmoil. in my depression, I couldn’t even pray. All I could do was call out to Jesus, and He found me in the hurricane and held my hand until my healing finally came.

About Patrick Day

In 2010, I escaped from four long years of deep, dark depression. This blog shares lessons I learned from those years as depicted in my autobiography - How I Escaped from Depression - as well as other insights about depression and anxiety that only come from someone who has gone through it. When you have a heart attack, you become an expert in heart attacks. When you have diabetes, you become an expert in that condition. As such, I am an expert in depression, with a four-year experiential degree and graduate studies in how to live a life going forward that keeps the ever-lurking Depression at a healthy distance.
